Associate Professor or Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Physical Oceanography, Technical University of Denmark

The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) offers the opportunity to build a research group in oceanography, with a focus on ocean physics, and engage in collaborations within one of Europe’s leading marine science institutes. You will be able to have a decisive impact on our growing master education in Ocean Engineering, develop your own research profile through collaborations across the institute, and shape the future of our research in oceanography.

You will be based at the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (Aqua) at DTUs campus in Kgs Lyngby, just north of Copenhagen. You will be associated with either a newly formed section of Oceans, Arctic, and technology, or with the Section of Coastal Ecology, depending on your specialisation. Both sections have a long tradition of conducting interdisciplinary research focused largely on how climate change and other anthropogenic stressors impact marine ecosystems, ranging from coastal and fjord waters to open ocean using a combination of field-based and modelling approaches.

Responsibilities and qualifications
You are an ambitious and skilled scientist with a PhD degree in Oceanography or a related field and a strong quantitative background. You will be responsible for educating the new generation of interdisciplinary ocean engineers and engage in collaborative interdisciplinary research at the interface between ocean physics and other disciplines such as marine ecology, biogeochemistry, and fisheries oceanography. The precise specialization of the position is open (modelling, observation, biogeochemistry, satellite, coastal, open ocean, Arctic, North Atlantic), and you are expected to complement the marine research portfolio across the institute.

The position is associated with our new MSc education in Ocean Engineering. You must be able to take responsibility for teaching mathematical and numerical aspects of physical oceanography and are expected to contribute to the further development the Ocean Engineering programme. The university offers pedagogical training, which you are expected to follow unless you have previous training.

DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both.

You may apply for the position at a tenure-track assistant professor or associate professor level. Applicants will be assessed considering the position they choose to apply for, with the emphasis being on evidence of potential rather than track record for the assistant professorship.

As a formal qualification you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent). If you are applying for the associate professor position you should also have academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding an assistant professorship and documented didactic/pedagogic training.

You will be assessed against the responsibilities and qualifications stated above and the following general criteria:

  • Experience and quality of teaching
  • Research experience
  • Research vision and potential
  • International impact and experience
  • Societal impact
  • Innovativeness, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
  • Leadership, collaboration, and interdisciplinary skills
  • Communication skills

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The start date is 1 June 2025, or as soon as possible. The position is a full-time position.

The assistant professor position is part of DTU’s Tenure Track program. Read more about the program and the recruitment process here.
