H2Ohio Wetland Bird Monitoring Technician, Ohio State University and Winous Point Marsh Conservancy
Position Description: Field Research Assistant I
Proposed rate of pay: $16.00/hour

Job Description:
Successful applicants will work on a project designed to relate bird use to environmental characteristics and water quality functions of wetlands recently restored through H2Ohio and other wildlife habitat restoration programs in northern Ohio. Selected candidates will conduct visual and auditory point counts of secretive marsh birds, waterfowl, and other wetlands-dependent birds at multiple survey points established within approximately 60 restoration project areas on public- and private-owned lands. Vegetation characteristics, water quality, and other physicals and biological measurements will be recorded at the end of the field season. This research project is a collaborative effort involving the Terrestrial Wildlife Ecology Laboratory at Ohio State University, Great Lakes Audubon, Winous Point Marsh Conservancy, and the Ohio Division of Wildlife. Winous Point March Conservancy is the base of field operations where housing may be provided. Expect 40-hour work weeks including weekends and early mornings/evenings. Overnight travel may be required for Northeastern Ohio surveys.
Primary Job Duties:
70% – Conduct visual and auditory point count surveys of wetland birds on recently restored wetlands in northern Ohio.
20% – Measure vegetation cover characteristics and take water quality measurements near avian point count locations in recently restored wetlands in northwestern Ohio.
10% – Data entry and management. Perform routine statistical summaries and Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping applications.

- Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications: Completion of substantial portion of core curriculum required for a BS or BA degree in Forestry, Fisheries and Wildlife Management, Natural Resources Management, Environmental Science, Animal Sciences, and/or equivalent work experience. Ability to identify midwestern wetland birds by sight and sound. Ability to identify common wetland plants, mammals, amphibians, and reptiles. Ability to navigate with hand-held GPS, operate hand-powered watercraft, (canoe, kayak, rowboat) and use specialized equipment used to detect and identify wetlands-dependent wildlife (call broadcast system, binoculars, spotting scope). Familiar with Microsoft Office and ArcGIS. Must have a valid driver’s license. Work is mostly outdoors traveling by foot (several miles each day) on dry or wet/flooded ground or with small watercraft when necessary.
