Marine Science Research Fellow, St. Mary’s College of Maryland
The Department of Marine Science at St. Mary’s College of Maryland is accepting applications for a temporary appointment as Marine Science Research Fellow, beginning Fall 2025. This appointment will be for one year, with continuation pending performance and funding for up to a total of 2.5 years.
Project description: The Fellow will be charged with linking Atlantic Sturgeon acoustic telemetry data to remotely sensed and modelled data to predict the occurrence of Atlantic Sturgeon. The Fellow, under the guidance of Dr. Matthew Breece (SMCM) and Dr. Matthew Oliver (UD), will develop a forecasting tool to reduce impacts (construction, dredging, fisheries etc.) to Atlantic Sturgeon through partnerships with state and federal scientists, researchers, and managers.
Duties and Responsibilities: Lead data compilation to match sturgeon locations to oceanographic data. Develop Species Distribution and Occurrence models that can be deployed real-time. Participate in associated field efforts for sensor deployment and real-time operation (New York Harbor to South Carolina). Coordinate with project partners to develop and optimize a web based Atlantic Sturgeon Forecasting tool. Lead multiple first-authored publications. Teach 1-2 courses in the Marine Science Department each year; the topic for these courses will be based on the applicant’s area of expertise and/or programmatic need.

Salary range: $65,000 – $70,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
