PhD student opportunity in contaminant chemistry at the University of Cincinnati
The Niu Emerging Contaminants Group at the University of Cincinnati employ environmental organic chemistry and analytical chemistry approaches to identify and solve environmental and public health problems caused by organic pollutants. We are actively researching the following topics: environmental analysis and monitoring of organic contaminants; environmental photochemistry; green chemistry; fate and transport of anthropogenic and/or natural organic compounds. Emerging contaminants of current concern in the group include PFAS, cyanotoxins, pesticides, nano- microplastics, and contaminants from industrial fabrications, etc.
The Niu Lab at the University of Cincinnati is interested in recruiting 1-2 graduate assistants (PhD or MS students) in the areas of emerging contaminants and photochemistry. Experiences with at least one of the following areas are desired: natural organic matter isolation and characterization, photochemistry, microplastics chemistry, chemical risk assessment, and environmental transformation processes. Experimental expertise in at least one of the following areas is desired: environmental sampling, LC-MS/MS, fluorescent spectrophotometer, GC-MS, photodegradation, and materials characterization instrumentations.
Some other qualifications and responsibilities include:
- B.S. in environmental sciences, chemistry, environmental engineering, or a related field.
- Excellent teamwork, communication (written and oral in English), and interpersonal skills.
- Work closely and collaboratively with other scientists to design, implement, analyze, and summarize innovative research.
The expected start time is flexible. Applicants should send a single pdf file including a CV, transcript, and the names and contact information of at least two references to: xizhi.niu@kaust.edu.sa. Please use “EnvPhD-Your name-2024” as the subject line.
