Research Lab Technician, University of Toledo
Job Description:
The University of Toledo’s Department of Environmental Sciences seeks a Research Lab Technician who will assist with soil sample processing and analysis, as well as supporting laboratory operations for research studying wetland nutrient cycling.
This technician will be based at U. Toledo, working on both Main Campus and at the Lake Erie Center. This position will be responsible for analyzing the concentrations of nutrients and other mineral and organic solutes in wetland soil, sediment, and water samples. This will be done using analytical infrastructure including but not limited to a SEAL discrete analyzer and a Shimadzu total carbon and nitrogen analyzer. The technician will also check, maintain, and archive analytical data, and work with the COMPASS research team to assist with data review and archiving. Training will be provided.
These instruments are presently located at the UToledo Lake Erie Center in Oregon OH, thus driving back and forth between main campus and the Lake Erie Center will be required as part of this position. However, we tentatively plan to move these instruments to main campus in 2025, reducing the need to drive between these locations.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education/experience/licensing:
- A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry biology, ecology, environmental sciences, or related discipline, including:
- At least two (2) years of coursework in chemistry
- At least two (2) years of scientific laboratory coursework
- Experience with working in a laboratory setting
- Willingness and ability to learn soil and nutrient analysis procedures (training to be provided)
- While training will be provided as needed, experience with chemical analyses of soil, water, and/or sediments is preferred.
- Including use of instruments used to measure concentrations of nutrients and other mineral and organic solutes, such as discrete analyzers and total carbon and nitrogen analyzers.
- Strong quantitative and analytical skills
- Experience working with data preferred.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Commitment to a safe and inclusive working environment required.
Communication and other skills:
- Effective communication skills (oral and written)
- Ability and desire to collaborate with large multi-institutional collaborative teams.
- Ability to work independently and to make decisions concerning laboratory safety and other logistical factors.
