Research Senior Technician, Stone Laboratory, The Ohio State University

Duties: Assists Research Coordinator with research projects and visiting researchers at the laboratory including: assists in sample collection aboard research boats on Lake Erie and inland lakes; coordinates sample submission to Stone Lab and coordinates analysis of those samples; maintains large datasets; prepares chemical solutions; conducts laboratory experiments; maintains and sustains cultures of algae; conducts analytical chemistry analysis of water samples; reviews quality control data and generates QC reports; oversees daily lab upkeep and operations; reports data to Ohio EPA; obtains relevant certifications needed by the Ohio EPA; maintains clean analytical lab glass wear; works with concentrated and caustic acids; picks up samples collected by other researchers on the mainland; assists with Research Experience for Undergraduates Program; assists in preparation and maintenance of research facilities for utilization by visitors, faculty, researchers, and students; conducts inventory of supplies and equipment; maintains and repairs scientific equipment; provides assistance with generation of relevant laboratory reports; oversees routine maintenance of the lab’s atmospheric mercury monitor; helps maintains animal cultures and follows IACUC protocols; leads public tours of the laboratory; gives presentations at public outreach events at the laboratory; attends meetings as needed; performs other duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate would have a MS or a BS with several years experience in a research lab, experience working with chemicals used for analytical chemistry, know about Lake Erie HAB issues, and be organized.

Desired Qualifications: Master's Level Degree in biology, ecology, chemistry, or environmental science or equivalent education/experience and 4-6 years of relevant experience. Experience aboard research vessels; demonstrated ability with analytical chemistry; background knowledge on harmful algal blooms, Lake Erie, or general water quality; experience in algae identification; boating experience.
