Senior Research Technician, Kent State University

The Department of Biological Sciences at Kent State University seeks a full time Research Technician to coordinate wetland restoration monitoring as part of the H2Ohio Wetland Monitoring Program. The technician will contribute to science-based decision making to improve environmental quality by working with a team of researchers evaluating the function of restored and constructed wetlands in Northeast Ohio. The successful candidate will coordinate and implement monitoring activities in H2Ohio wetland restoration projects in Northeast Ohio. The candidate will join a dynamic, supportive research group with opportunities for collaboration across disciplines and engagement with state policy makers, stakeholders, and public audiences. This position is supervised by Lauren Kinsman-Costello (lkinsman@kent.edu, https://laurenkinsmancostello.weebly.com/ ). This is a full-time, fixed term (one year) position, with opportunities for extension subject to availability of external grant funds.

Examples of duties include:

  • Implement monitoring tasks in Northeast Ohio restored wetlands, including field-based hydrology and water quality measures and collecting soil and water samples.
  • Communicate with local and regional conservation partners regarding restoration site history and characteristics, sampling plans, site access logistics, and coordination of volunteer-based community science observations and sample collection.
  • Implement laboratory analysis of water and soil samples using standard analytical procedures and equipment.
  • Manage data including implementing standard quality control/quality assurance procedures and documenting compiled metadata
  • Contribute to summarizing, graphing, and statistically analyzing data.
  • Contribute to writing reports, protocols, and other Monitoring Program related documents for both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Mentor and supervise graduate and undergraduate student researchers and workers.

  • Qualifications: Required: Bachelors in ecology, environmental science, geology, earth science, chemistry, data science, statistics or related field; Strong interpersonal and written communication skills; Ability and motivation to cultivate a supportive and safe work environment; Effective at working both independently and as a member of a team; Excellent organization skills; Valid U.S. driver’s license Desired: Masters or Ph.D. in ecology, environmental science, geology, earth science, chemistry, Data Science, Statistics or related field; Experience with one or more common ecosystem ecology tools, including analytical soil, sediment, or water analyses, field sampling and experimentation, and sensor system deployment and maintenance.; Demonstrated experience communicating with and to both technical and non-technical audiences including scientists, conservation professionals, ecosystem managers, landowners, the general public and/or other stakeholders; Competency in data management, synthesis, and analysis, using Microsoft Excel, R, GitHub, and other computational tools; Familiarity with Esri products (e.g., ArcGIS Survey123 and ArcGIS Online); Physical ability for strenuous field work; Ability to travel for field work and project meetings.
