Stewardship Technician, Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve
Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve (OWC NERR) is now accepting applications for a part-time, Stewardship Technician position in Huron along Ohio’s Lake Erie shore. The OWC NERR is part of a state-federal partnership of 30 protected sites in the U.S. that promote stewardship of our nation’s estuaries (https://coast.noaa.gov/nerrs/about/).
The successful applicant will join a team of environmental professionals that conduct research, education, training, and stewardship activities related to the Old Woman Creek estuary and other Lake Erie coastal ecosystems. The Reserve provides technical assistance to land/water managing agencies as well as conducts its own management activities, which include habitat surveys, species monitoring, invasive species removal, germination, and planting of native species. This position’s core focus areas include assisting in land management and restoration activities, invasive species removal, phenological species monitoring, coordinating volunteers, and promotion and use of the Reserve to various user groups.
Responsibilities:
1) Assist with development and implementation of stewardship projects.
2) Aid in community science initiatives, volunteer groups, and mapping projects.
3) Help with monitoring and control of invasive species through various methods.
4) Contribute to the Phenological Species Monitoring Program and perform associated data entry.
5) Provide support to general maintenance of land and water trails.
6) Other duties as assigned.
Preferred qualifications:
The ideal candidate will be motivated, self-starting, able to work within a team setting or independently, and have a passion for protecting natural areas. Applicants should have familiarity with plant identification and safety principles while working outdoors. Applicants would benefit from knowledge of environmental science, natural history, communications, environmental health, or a related field. Experience with plant invasive species removal, safe handling of pesticides, operation of field equipment (e.g., chainsaws, tractor, UTVs), unoccupied aerial vehicle operations, volunteer coordination, and hiking is desired. Proficiency with Microsoft products (e.g., Excel, Word, Office) required. Applicants must be able to lift at least 35 pounds and be tolerant of working in poor conditions (e.g., weather, biting insects, poison ivy). Understanding of water safety and First Aid/CPR certifications preferred.
State classification: Natural Resource Technician
This is a part-time, grant-funded position, with potential for renewal. This position will have flexible hours during the work week with some weekend work required.
