Water Quality Technician, Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve

Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve (OWC NERR) is now accepting applications for a part-time, Water Quality Technician position in Huron along Ohio’s Lake Erie shore. The OWC NERR is part of a state-federal partnership of 30 protected sites in the U.S. that promote stewardship of our nation’s estuaries (https://coast.noaa.gov/nerrs/about/).

The successful applicant will join a team of environmental professionals that conduct research,
education, training, and stewardship activities related to the Old Woman Creek estuary and other
Lake Erie coastal ecosystems. The Reserve routinely monitors the water quality of Lake Erie coastal
ecosystems as part of ongoing research and monitoring programs, including the NERR System-Wide Monitoring Program and the H2Ohio Wetland Monitoring Program. This position’s core focus areas include assisting with the collection and analysis of water samples and the deployment of
instrumentation to assess the water quality of coastal Lake Erie ecosystems.

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the implementation of the Reserve’s research and monitoring programs.
  • Assist with the chemical analysis of water samples in the OWC analytical research laboratory
    using standard methods.
  • Assist with field and laboratory work necessary to calibrate, maintain, and deploy equipment
used for monitoring and transmitting water quality and quantity data.
  • Coordinate and participate in water sample collections, including scheduling, washing and
labeling sample containers, and deploying/retrieving bottles used by automatic water samplers.
  • Assist with data collection, management, analysis, and reporting.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Preferred qualifications:
We anticipate that the candidate will spend approximately 80% of their time in the lab, and 20% in
the field. The ideal candidate will be motivated, self-starting, able to work within a team setting
or independently, and have a passion for protecting natural areas. Applicants should have
familiarity with monitoring the physical and chemical characteristics of estuarine and coastal
ecosystems. Applicants would benefit from knowledge of environmental science, natural history,
chemistry, environmental health, or a related field. Experience with the preparation of chemical
reagents and standards, and the operation of benchtop equipment for the analysis of nutrient and
carbon concentrations in water samples is desired. Proficiency with Microsoft products (e.g., Excel, Word, Office) required. Applicants must be able to lift at least 35 pounds and be tolerant of working in poor conditions (e.g., weather, biting insects, poison ivy). Understanding of water safety and First Aid/CPR certifications preferred.

State classification: Natural Resource Technician

This is a part-time, grant-funded position, with potential for renewal. This position will have
flexible hours during the work week.

Candidate must be able to provide transportation to Old Woman Creek (NERR) State Nature Preserve at 2514 Cleveland Road East, Huron OH 44839.
